WHEN National Hunt jockey Tom Scudamore rode in from his first Cheltenham Festival winner, he looked up to the stands to see his grandfather, Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning jockey Michael Scudamore, saluting him.

“I remember feeling quite emotional, ” says Tom, who had the success of his predecessor ingrained in him from boyhood, with racing memorabilia adorning his grandfather’s office walls.

“Granddad wasn’t a great man for small talk, ” adds Tom, whose grandfather died in 2014. “He was very down to earth, very charming. Telling me he was proud wouldn’t have been his way, but you knew he was. You could see it without him having to say anything. He had a massive influence on my career.”
