Shirley Shahan: The Drag-On-Lady
Old Cars columnist Patrick Foster tells the story of famous racing femme fatale Shirley Shahan, who slain many male competitors on the quarter-mile and even in economy runs.
Shahan’s talent and abilities made her famous behind the wheel, and her beauty certainly didn’t hurt her in a male-dominated field. Foster’s new book, “Shirley Shahan: The Drag-On-Lady,” captures Shahan’s personality as well as her personal and professional experiences in the automobile industry through his longtime friendship with her, and through interviews conducted for the book.
In its seven chapters, the book chronologically covers Shahan’s early life; her marriage to a fellow racer; her growing reputation; Shahan’s years racing Dodge and Plymouth (1965-1968); the Mobil Economy Runs; her years with AMC; and her post-1971 years.
The paperback book is filled with hundreds of vintage color and black-and-white
