AS I WRITE this note, I’m sitting on a sun-drenched patio near the Pacific. Waves are gently lapping at the sand, shorebirds sing a resounding chorus, and palm tree branches sway in the breeze. In a word, it’s serene.

The process to get here? Not so much.
