BURIED TREASURE
Early on a May morning in the garden at Manley Knoll in Cheshire, the first rays of dawn sunshine slant through the fresh spring foliage of tall oaks, beeches and limes. They illuminate great swathes of tulips, which glow purple, red and orange, and highlight the vivid hues of rhododendrons and azaleas emerging in the nearby Quarry Garden. All the while, a clear blue sky is filled with the welcoming sound of birdsong.
It is hard to believe that this exquisitely maintained ten-acre garden was once largely overgrown. Its panoramic view towards the county’s wooded Sandstone Ridge was obscured, its borders under-utilised, and the Quarry Garden buried under rotten leaves and vegetation.
