Freedom is a wonderful gift available to the knifemakers among us who can easily skip away while we believe we are living the good life. As with many others, we can enjoy our freedom but we must work to preserve it.
When I talk to other makers, some tell me they make knives for enjoyment, because they seek the freedom of working for themselves or for the extra cash. I do not know of many who made their entire livelihood by income from knives; usually they inherited some money, are retired from a good paying job or have a wife who works. I make knives because I have been obsessed with working and using knives and wonder what the Excalibur of legend would be like.
