With the benefit of hindsight, it was clearly one of those millisecond moments that could have turned out bad, or really, really bad.

When you smack into a loose and gnarly gooley while powering up a trail deep in the jungle, with a rock wall on one side and a huge drop-off to the other, it’s a 50/50 crap shoot on how things will play out.

“I hit that gooley and it just turned me sideways, towards the edge of the trail where there was a whopping great drop down the hill!” exclaims Brett Kingham, who can laugh about it now but respects the fact things could have turned out a whole lot worse.

“We hit the edge, and just for a millisecond I thought I could bail out and the bike might stay up on the track … but no way, the bike was just too heavy and over the edge we went. I was rolling down through the vines and
