Stories of explorers and mysterious shipwrecks have long since captured the imaginations of children and adults alike. So it’s no wonder that the discovery of Endurance, the lost ship of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, has prompted excitement 107 years after it sank beneath the icy waters.
Discovered on 5 March 2022 almost 3km under Antarctica’s freezing Weddell Sea, the ill-fated vessel was found perfectly preserved on the sea bed. Footage from underwater robots even shows the name ‘Endurance’ in its shining gold font across the ship’s stern.
