y music is shaped by my upbringing in the Hebrides, where Gaelic radio was always on in our house and I heard Gaelic singing and piping on a daily basis. A great singer called Hugh Matheson lived next door, and as I got older he taught me local songs and the stories behind them. Hugh and my schoolteacher Isa McKillop opened the door to, the local poets who wrote about their lived experience. Folksong and story are at the heart of music I create, and I recognise the importance of these songs that have endured, and not just in the Gaelic language either.
