Catana has been a leader in producing quick cruising catamarans that also offer spacious accommodation. This 49ft bluewater design is intended to provide comfortable, safe and easy sailing at speeds that match the true wind. It’s also promising to see the yard concentrating on Catana again (after a focus on Bali) and this size sector, releasing its first new model in five years.
The slender hulls have fine inverse bow sections. Both these and the shape of the electrically operated daggerboards benefit from hydrodynamic analysis to minimise drag.
Part of the success of the formula is also in the high-tech construction that keeps the total displacement in check. In this case carbon infusion for key elements, including bulkheads and coachroof, helps to create a stiff structure without adding unnecessary weight.
The rig is stepped further aft than usual, allowing for a good balance between the square top mainsail and a large foretriangle that has dimensions that allow for big reaching sails. Weight distribution has also been moved aft compared to previous models, which allows the boat to be pushed harder
