Frozen in time

A little over a century after it vanished beneath the ice, experts have uncovered the wreck of the Endurance – explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship that famously sank in the Weddell Sea off the coast of Antarctica in 1915.

The discovery of appears to be so well preserved. Experts from the search expedition, spearheaded by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust, revealed images – including that of the ship’s wheel and aft well deck (below) – that show its sections still intact, with artefacts including anchors, boots and crockery evident throughout.
