We have a Japanese plum in the garden. The first of our fruit trees to blossom, covering itself with white flowers in late winter and early spring, it’s a ‘Satsuma’, one of the best backyard varieties.
Nearby are several English plums — ‘Victoria’, ‘President’ and ‘Greengage’ — all still resolutely grey and bare of flowers.
In late summer and early autumn, when the fruit ripens, it tastes of roses. Along with peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, apples and pears, plums are part of the enormous rose family.
