Horace and John Dodge were rarities among the figures in the early automotive industry — unlike the vast majority of their colleagues and competitors, they were successful.
Their operation began with bicycles before transitioning to a machine shop in 1901. It was an example of perfect timing, as automobiles were starting to be seen as having potential, and anybody hoping to capitalize on that possible future needed machine work.
