Recent used machinery articles have tended to focus upon specifications, with the suggestion that well-serviced and prepared used kit will deliver solid performance if you continue to look after it. Increasingly, there is less need for an in-depth look at bits that break or have the potential to let you down.
To say this will apply to a Fastrac 4220 or its less powerful siblings, the nominal 160hp 4160 and 189hp 4190, could be a bit misleading. These are complex tractors that demand not just top-notch attention to general servicing but a good operator too.
Skip a service, ignore a warning light or just expect anyone to be able to run a 4000 series and you may find yourself joining the ‘Fastracs are not dependable club’.
This is not meant to deter used buyers. Invest in the right 4220, pay for its continued care and you are part way to securing what many would argue is the most comfortable and safest tractor on the road. Learn to get the ballast right, and be prepared to fiddle with tyre pressures, and both top and draft work can be carried out with aplomb too. Our past reports (see reading) all suggest a Fastrac 4220 is an impressive bit of kit.
