The Newt, Bruton, Somerset
Unique selling point Magnificent formal gardens.
The low-down Set among 800 acres of woodland and farmland, The Newt hotel, based in and around a 17th-century former country house, is best known for its beautiful gardens. They have been tended by various experts over the past couple of centuries, with their most recent incarnation overseen by renowned Italo-French architect Patrice Taravella, whose belief is that gardens should be both useful and alluring.
Herbs, flowers, fruit, vegetables and honey produced on site supply the restaurants within the hotel and wider estate, while you’ll also find cottage gardens, a Victorian fragrance garden, and the Parabola walled garden containing a vast collection of apple trees arranged in a baroque-style maze. Greenhouses and fountains pepper the landscape, and is an immersive, interactive exhibition charting the history and evolution
