‘We stay connected’

Sue Ashdown Day, 57, lives in Blythe Hill, London, with her husband Antony, 54, their sons Sylvan, 18, and Guy, 16, and the family dog, Skipper.

Our Border collie Skipper soon taught me that when you have a dog, you meet people! We’d only had Skipper a few weeks in 2019 when I fell into a routine of congregating with the same familiar faces of dog walkers in the park, and got chatting to Helena. She mentioned she was starting a WhatsApp group for local people with dogs, and I was one of the first people she added. Pretty soon, whenever any of us got talking to a fellow dog walker, we would invite them to join us.

The group soon grew to nearly 140 members. It was a lifeline in lockdown. We’ve used the group to arrange
