Every city has a story, and Matera’s rags-to-riches tale may be one of Europe’s most exceptional. The world’s third-oldest city after Aleppo and Jericho, it was only 70 years ago that this spectacular site was branded the ‘shame of Italy’ – so much so that in the 1950s, the government moved everyone out, declaring its residents were living in a state of emergency.
