Make-Ahead Meals

When a crib appeared in my bedroom, it signaled the end of my six-year reign as baby of the family. To help prepare me for the event, Mom did not hand me stories about storks or cabbage patches. Instead she shared her pamphlets from the doctor’s office. My takeaway was that it was especially important to remember your prenatal vitamins and wear low-heeled shoes.

As the due date drew near, Mom and I created a baby-themed construction-paper sign. When it was time for Dad to take her to the hospital, if I was at school or asleep, she would attach the notice to the kitchen curtains
