A goatherd in the Ethiopian Kaffa Plateau, Kaldi is said to have discovered the coffee plant and the energising effects of its leaves and berries. Legend has it that Kaldi noticed his goats were jumping around and playing with particular energy after ingesting the leaves and berries of a small bush that grew wild in the area. He is believed to have chewed the berries and leaves as well then reported their properties to nearby monks, who carried the experimentation further.
