WHEN BRINGING AN ex-racehorse home, the first thing to consider is their management. Routine is key because racehorses are used to a strict regime when in training. Most things happen in the same order each day, so the horses know pretty much what to expect. Keeping them in a reliable routine will help them to settle.

A racehorse’s life can be very different from that of a riding horse. Although a large number of racing yards will provide their horses with turnout, this will be limited in comparison with your general riding horses. Once in training, they are unlikely to be turned out. They will possibly be grazed in-hand
