UNWRAPPING THE OLD GHOST ROAD

November 2018

Our family is 50 per cent Swiss so planning ahead is the required formula for any significant undertaking. After a few minutes of rallied enthusiasm in late November 2018, bookings were made for a five-day family odyssey on the Old Ghost Road (OGR). The journey would span Christmas 2019 and our daughter Olive’s 8th birthday.

Email spam was sent to all biking families in my known universe. Enter Loïc, Rohan (both 6 at the time of the ride), Jess and Sam. A mere handful of days passed before receiving confirmation of their participation. A few months later Winnie, Boyd, Mel and Richie also pledged attendance for two of the four nights.

The stage was set and the conversation turned to food—more specifically, how we would manage the required festive season fare for five days in the backcountry. No worries, we had a year to plan.
