Hanmer Springs is one of those semi-hidden South Island gems that’s easy to overlook if you haven’t done your homework.

Being situated nine clicks off SH7 between Christchurch and Nelson, it’s far enough off the beaten track to avoid hordes of clueless tourists, while still retaining a reputation as a popular getaway spot for Cantabrians eager for a soak in the natural hot pools and a change of scenery.

And on the scenery front, Hanmer’s certainly not lacking. Nestled into pines and fir trees at the base of the Southern Alps, the village carries an atmosphere reminiscent of a small European hamlet, but with the laid-back local vibe you’d expect from a smaller southern settlement.

Over the years Hanmer Springs has also established itself as a real mountain biking hub, particularly for families and casual weekenders.

The forest surrounding the township holds a respectable network of well-designed trails, with a large number of green tracks winding through flat and gently-rolling pine forests off Jollies Pass Rd.

As an extra drawcard, you can easily find yourself on fun, flowing singletrack after just a five-minute ride from the hot springs in the centre of town.

As popular as the trails are with novice and intermediate riders, anyone who deems themselves as an advanced or expert
