Great walking in splendid scenery, and fascinating local history
“We are mere transients, who sing,” it reads, chiselled into a solid timber ring at the Battle of Bannockburn memorial site. The poetic words echo across the rolling landscape, in sight of the imposing Stirling Castle that sits aloft on a solitary crag.
This is where Robert the Bruce, now straddling his horse in bronze, battle-axe at the ready, defeated England’s Edward II in 1314, during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
Bannockburn is regarded as the most significant clash in Scottish history, and Stirling Castle, one of the most important castles in Scotland.
Father and son battles
The historic city of Stirling was a fine place for my daughter, Lara, and me to begin a short tour of Scotland, taking in some of the country’s great history, its stories and iconic sights.
Stirling was an important focal point in Scottish history for many centuries, witnessing numerous royal births, deaths, wars and coronations.
The restored castle is open to the public
