In 1856, a boy named Nikola was born in a little village called Smiljan. Back then, it was in the Austrian Empire – but it’s now in the country of Croatia.
Nikola’s father was a priest, and a very clever man. He taught Nikola many things – how to read, how to write, and how to enjoy poetry. When he gave his son lessons, he would say, “Little Niko, when you grow up, you must become a priest like me!”
