Mackinac Island sits in the waters of Lake Huron, right between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas. It has a long and rich history. It was an Indigenous settlement and a fur trading post. The U.S. military fort built in the late 1700s still stands and is open to the public as a museum. In fact, the entire island has been designated a National Historic Landmark. With most of the island preserved as a state park today, the island is a popular vacation and summer colony. Thousands of people visit the tiny town every year. But it isn’t just a tourist
