HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

There are few phenomena more spectacular than the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, to give them their correct name. This magical spectacle in the night sky isn’t always that easy to see or find so, if you do track down the aurora you’ll want to make sure you photograph them correctly.

In this article, I’m going to give you all the information you need for perfect Northern Lights images.

WHAT CAUSES THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

Our sun is continuously bombarding Earth with a solar wind of electromagnetic waves and particles, which all act differently with the atmospheric atoms they encounter. The solar wind’s electromagnetic particles and its highest frequencies contain enough energy to strip electrons from the atmospheric atoms, creating a charge imbalance known as ionization.
