You left QPR to sign for Manchester United in 1991. Were any other clubs chasing your signature at the time?
I spoke to Arsenal and Tottenham. Everton and Sheffield Wednesday were keen too, but I received letters from Everton fans telling me not to go there. I’d supported Spurs as a kid, and I remember meeting Terry Venables in London, thinking I was going to sign for them. United actually got in touch while I was sat there, and even Terry said I should speak to them.
