The first mallard pairs are already settled on the riverbank and cock pheasants are well advanced with their clattering displays. Some of this behaviour encourages the birds to abandon any care for self-preservation and, while it might be spectacular to watch a couple of pheasants showing themselves off to their best advantage, I wonder why they so often choose to squabble on small and winding country roads. Het up and dangerously hormonal, they seem oblivious to the oncoming traffic.
Even when I slow down in my truck to a walking pace and offer plenty of room, they carry on with their jousting and shout at the sound of my engine as if they owned the road. I
