JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS THROUGH HISTORY

Elizabeth II is not the only British monarch whose reign has been celebrated by the nation with big jubilee festivities. Here we look back at three other historic ceremonial occasions: the Golden and Diamond Jubilees of Queen Victoria in 1887 and 1897, which were marked with grand spectacle; the Silver Jubilee of George V in 1935 and George III’s Golden Jubilee on 25 October 1809, the start of the 50th year of his reign.
Just like today, the public were given the opportunity to buy keepsakes. These included teapots, butter dishes, mirrors, handkerchiefs, woven silk pictures and even wallpaper to celebrate Queen Victoria’s 50 years on the throne.
