MODERN EUROPEAN FRIGATES Guarding the seas in a new Cold War
The modern frigates now being called upon to safeguard Europe’s maritime domain are amongst the most advanced in the world today. Representing a generational change in technology, they benefit from major evolutions in design practice and equipment since the days of the original Cold War over 30 years ago.
MODULARITY
Located at one of the focal points of friction with Russia is Scandinavia, whose navies have been among those at the forefront when driving technological change. One important design trend that gained early traction in the region was the use of modular containerised systems. A major pioneer was the Royal Danish Navy with their Standard Flex system, which was originally deployed in the Flyvefisken class patrol boats. It essentially involves slotting standardised containers housing a range of weapons and sensors into pre-prepared positions that interface with the ship’s combat management system and appropriate services.
The Standard Flex system features prominently in Denmark’s Absalon and Iver Huitfeldt class frigates. The five ships were built to a largely common design but are focused on different
