STRETCH YOUR RANDS
IT’S a cliché to say times are tough but boy, they really are. Skyrocketing petrol costs, soaring food prices, escalating electricity tariffs – it’s enough to give you sleepless nights.
Eskom, the economic fallout from the pandemic and rocketing unemployment numbers have created a perfect storm of strife and coming out at the end of each month is a nightmare for many South Africans. Tightening our belts is more of a necessity than ever – which is why we went in search of answers to make our rands and cents stretch a little further.
THE BENEFITS OF STOCKPILING
NCUMISA NDELU (40), WHO’S DUBBED SA’S STOCKPILE QUEEN THANKS TO HER 1 FAMILY 1 STOCKPILE FACEBOOK GROUP, BELIEVES STRATEGIC BULK BUYING CAN HELP YOU GET THE MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK.
“By stockpiling you not only reduce your monthly shopping bill in the long run, but you also spend less time in the shops,” Ncumisa tells YOU.
HOW TO BUY IN BULK
Choose items with a long shelf life. Things like paper goods, dry foods, detergents, toiletries and nappies are great to buy in bulk. “When buying nappies in bulk, buy different sizes because babies grow so fast,” Ncumisa says.
Check the expiry dates of items. It doesn’t help to stockpile if you aren’t going to use everything in time. Determine exactly what will be used by your family based on your specific needs.
