ORIGINAL DRAMA There will never be another hero like brave, cocky and conflicted warrior Uhtred (the magnetic Alexander Dreymon, above left), a 9th-century Saxon who was kidnapped as a child and raised by Viking Danes. We’ve followed the lusty fighter’s bloody quest to reclaim his birthright, Bebbanburg Castle, since the epic saga’s 2015 premiere. With the fifth and final season now streaming, it’s time to either rewatch or introduce yourself to this series that rivals Game of Thrones in production values, storytelling and fascinating characters.
In the final season, Uhtred is caught, as usual, between the beloved berserkers he grew up with and the rulers of the Saxon kingdoms (which will one day unite as England). “One of Uhtred’s best qualities is that he is extremely loyal. One of his worst: He’s loyal to people on opposite sides,” says Dreymon.
The premiere picks up a few years after the Season 4 finale. Uhtred is working as a sheriff for his great love, Lady Aethelflaed (Millie Brady). “[He’s] very much in love with [her].
