A good mare, with a 7lb sex allowance, is worth her weight in gold, and it was all pretty smooth for the defending champion. Epatante briefly threatened but she landed awkwardly at the last which snuffed out her challenge, leaving Honeysuckle to join the hurdling greats.

Really, Tuesday was all about the crowd on its return in force after Honeysuckle and Rachael Blackmore had won it behind closed doors 12 months earlier and returned to stoney silence. This time the crowd roared the pair on from when she touched down
