Part of the reason why gravel bikes have gained such popularity is that they’re all-singing, all-dancing. But not everyone can be Beyoncé.

Having found its niche between road and mountain bikes, the gravel sector is now spawning niches within niches, with ‘race bike with added tyre clearance’ at one end of the spectrum and ‘round-the-world tourer’ at the other. So where does the Vitus Substance fit in?

The Substance began as a range of steel bikes, and while this latest version has a carbon frame, Vitus categorises it as ‘Adventure Road’. That puts it at the beefier end
