Smooth operator

IT’SOFTEN been reported that the XJ Coupe was one of Sir WilliamLyons’ favourite Jaguars. And if that’s true, who can blame him? Its perfect proportions and graceful linesmake the two-door saloon one of the company’s prettiest cars in its 100-year history.

This made it an ideal recipient for Jaguar’s magnificent 5.3-litre V12whose refinement was a perfect match for the car’s classy, laid back image. To illustrate just how perfect, we’re taking the very last example built for a drive.

It’s not the first time I’ve been lucky enough to experience this car – I did so seven years ago for the London to Brighton Run (see JW, July 2015, p68). But when the bright sunlight illuminates the Squadron Blue paint as it’s rolled out of JaguarHeritage’s workshop, I admit to feeling as excited as I did back then.
