Apple hasn’t tied the smartwatch market up in a bow quite yet. As much as the fitness features of the Apple Watch shine, many serious runners want something meatier: more often than not, that comes from Garmin. The Fenix 7, available in three sizes and a range of specs, is probably the sharpest iteration on its premium, outdoorsy, triathlonfriendly vertical so far.

Garmin hasn’t thrown its carefully honed formula to the wind. Though the Fenix 7 earns itself a new touch screen for quick control, the buttons are still there, now with a little more rugged shielding. Solar charging makes an appearance on more expensive models, helping you power through without a charge, but if you opt for the Solar Sapphire edition you no longer have to choose between juice from the sun and an extra-tough screen. Pick up the bigger Fenix 7X, and you can expect up to five weeks’ battery with GPS off.
