An early-year medley of finches

ON JANUARY 15, I walked from Betws-y-coed to Llanrwst via the Gwydyr Forest. Coco the toy poodle accompanied me. The previous night’s frost had thawed by daybreak and left the ground cold and damp.
While walking we heard, but didn’t see, some redpolls and separately some siskins in flight. Some of the mature pine trees are so tall that sight is obstructed, so you hear but often don’t see much
