STOP USING RUBBISH SOFTWARE
We all have PC programs we continue to use even though better alternatives are available. Sometimes this is simply through force of habit, or because it’s easier (and lazier) to run a familiar tool from our desktop or Start menu than it is to go through the hassle of downloading and installing something new. But most of us stick with old software, even if it’s slow, prone to freeze and nags us to upgrade to a paid-for version, because we don’t have the time or inclination to research superior alternatives.
Here, we do the hard work for you by recommending 20 fantastic free alternatives to desktop programs and mobile apps that are flawed and past their best. This might be because they haven’t been updated for ages, or they’ve had an update that’s made them worse. Others may have started charging for certain features, are now bundled with junk or are simply not needed any more.
We’re sure you won’t agree with all the programs we’ve proposed ditching – indeed a couple are certain to raise a few hackles – and we’re not expecting you to uninstall your favourite software immediately. But hopefully you’ll find our suggested replacements useful and intriguing enough to give them a go.

STOP USING RUBBISH SOFTWARE
1 System Cleaner
Ditch CCleaner
CCleaner was once one of our – and probably your – favourite free programs, providing a quick and easy way to remove junk from your computer. But, as we’ve often reported, since it was bought by Avast five years ago, CCleaner has suffered a string of security and privacy flaws, been blacklisted by Microsoft for bundling potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) and annoyed millions of users with its nags to install other Avast tools.
The free edition now teases you with useful features such as Software Updater and Driver Updater, only to inform you – after carrying out an initial scan – that you’ll need to pay £24.95 for a Professional subscription to use them, and its formerly free start-up manager also now requires upgrading.
Replace with BleachBit
Like CCleaner, BleachBit can remove junk from your PC, free up space and protect your privacy by quickly deleting sensitive files. There’s no paid-for edition, so you won’t see any adverts or nag screens, and its developer doesn’t make any other software, so bundled junk isn’t a problem either. Because it’s open source its code is carefully monitored to ensure nothing dodgy is sneaked in.
BleachBit automatically detects which popular programs are installed
