This is the 10th liveaction movie for the Caped Crusader since 1989’s Batman kicked off the superhero franchise business model and the idea that being a billionaire orphan with a vigilante side hustle probably meant not all was well in the belfry.

Those films have offered wildly varying results, from the peak of Christopher Nolan’s 2008 to 1997’s low, , a film that probably still causes George Clooney nightmares. Somewhere between Clooney hanging up his nippled batsuit and Christian Bale taking on the role with that furball voice in the Nolan films, Batman became the most solemn of cinema superheroes.
