MATH’S NOTES

WA2NDM is recovering from a medical procedure and was unable to produce a column for this issue, so we dug back a little over two decades to reprise Irwin’s January 2001 column, in which he welcomed the new century by looking back at how far radio technology had come in its first 100 years and looking forward at what the 21st century might bring. Twenty-one years in, we can already say that he was right on target in some respects and that other innovations are still to be realized. But his basic message – that it’s up to us to make innovation happen – is as valid today as it was in 2001. – W2VU
