go! Platteland

What’s the rush?

About 4 km from the Stellenbosch town centre, at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, you’ll find– on Saturdays – locals mingling under a Bedouin-style tent. Residents, yes, but Capetonians and overseas visitors, too, like to come to the Slow Market at Oude Libertas to escape the crowds.

The market has been held here since 2008, and today there are more than 60 stands where you can find everything and the kitchen sink under one roof: treats that would have any sweet tooth coming back for more; fresh fruit and vegetables; coffee; arts and crafts; and a variety of charming things and pampering products.

The market is held every Saturday* from 09:00 to 14:00.

It has been six months since I returned to the USA, my home country – after 10 years in the little dorpie of Rosendal in the South African platteland. Where we live now, the roads are smooth and the electricity is always on, but there is a large hole
