Alphabet City S IS FOR: SINGA

Was it a lion or a tiger that Sang, resided on the island, the Srivijayan prince from Palembang thought he saw otherwise and bestowed the name Singapura—or “lion city” in Sanskrit—on the city in the 13th century. An artist and illustrator whose body of work includes motifs of animals and creatures, Toby Tan, known by his moniker Tobyato, has illustrated an abstract representation of the creature—is it a lion or a tiger?—in his signature art style, “as a shout-out to the origins of our country’s name”.
