Why write fiction set in the past?
Surely all the amazing stuff that goes on in the world today should be enough to inspire even the most jaded author and engage even the most exacting reader?
Maybe not, because the huge popularity of historical fiction, in both novel and short story format, and of costume drama on stage and screen, suggests our appetite for stories set in the past is still insatiable.
