Ancient examples of courtyard dwellings have been found in Rome, China and Morocco. In today’s homes, courtyards are generally inefficient in plan, requiring large amounts of circulation spaces in proportion to the usable ones. However, on urban sites, they can be a good solution to creating external space without inviting any overlooking onto neighbouring sites. What’s more, an internal courtyard can be a great means of introducing natural light to living spaces deep within a floorplan.
