CONOR SWAIL has just reached a major milestone in his career and yet there is an aura of calm about the rider in the warm-up ring for the International Arena at the Winter Equestrian Festival, Wellington, Florida. The Irishman is not one to get flustered as he walks his horse Count Me In (Crosby) quietly around the warm-up fence, preparing to add to a tally of recent victories that has tipped the global-ranking algorithm in his favour and put him in the top 10 showjumpers worldwide.

“This is the most successful time I’ve had,” says Conor at his barn later that week. “It’s something that’s very difficult to do. When my career is over, it’s nice to say that I’ve been in the top 10 in the world.”

The time for nostalgia seems a long way off for Conor who, at the seasoned age of 50, is flying high – not least by commuting
