You can’t have a garden or allotment without beans. They’re humble and wholesome once cooked (the flavour of a freshly picked bean versus a supermarket bean is night and day), and they’re bold and beautiful on the plot. With crimson flowers, curling tendrils, pods from green to purple hiding shining gems in different hues, speckles and swirls, beans are attractive and useful, and there is one for everyone. From tall vines that can cover unsightly walls to dwarf beans that are great for window boxes, there are hundreds of varieties.
