You must have noticed it – the way some used classic bike importers advertise 400 versions of otherwise popular larger models. Clearly what was unseen here had been huge overseas.
The situation started in the USA in the late 1960s. A huge number of college kids had been bought Honda 50 step-thru bikes by their parents for the last years of their education. And the massive sales of the little C100 model made millions for Honda who had the right product at the right time and created a reputation for good products. Later in the 1960s when those riders entered the workforce and wanted to stay with motorcycling, they threw away the little bikes and bought a proper bike with affordable insurance.
