When headlines for an international sports event featuring top competitors of the day include phrases such as 'only qualifiers' and 'toughest ever', it can safely be assumed the event was not easy.
Just such a situation was presented to the headline writers of the motorcycle press in September 1960, when France hosted the Moto Cross des Nations at the Cassel circuit in the north of the country.
In the lead up to the prestigious event there were predictions in the press of a Swedish win and even Great Britain's team man, BSA's Jeff Smith, stated in his preview of the event the Swedes, on paper at least, could come out on top. However, sporting events are not run on paper, they exist in the real world where all sorts of factors come in to play and as Team GB were going into the event as the reigning MXdN champions, Smith felt they could do it again.
