It might be a cold, grey day outside, but the magnificent Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg in the heart of Copenhagen is both warm and atmospheric.

This is the official residence of Crown Prince Frederik, heir to the Danish throne, and his wife Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, who was recently photographed at home in these stunning pictures to mark her 50th birthday.

She cuts an elegant figure in the surrounding opulence of the Knights Hall, considered the palace’s grandest room, with its striking chandeliers and candlesticks, parquet flooring and large sofas bringing light and comfort to an otherwise austere space.
