What kind of man was your father, Eric?

That’s not a simple question, but he was funny, and he enjoyed life like no-one else I’ve met since. He was interested in things and studied them. He loved poetry. I rarely saw him angry. One of the things I loved about him is that he didn’t treat kids as stupid, like some people do—like, ‘Oh, you’re just a child’. He saw kids as fresh minds that hadn’t heard everything—and kids love and connect to his music more than most people. He was my first teacher: He taught me cello, he taught me theory.
