At the time of writing, we’ve no idea whether or not Ruben Fleischer’s film adaptation is a hit (though we know where our money is). Either way, making an movie seems like a fool’s errand. The series’ matinee thrills are already ripped from the blockbuster-cinema playbook – take away the interactive elements, and there’s a good chance this will be nothing more than a facsimile of a facsimile. Not that these are games where the player has a great deal of say in how things shake out: when things are going right, we’re actors (or, during the more explosive sequences, their stunt doubles) hitting our cues perfectly. When it goes wrong, we can almost hear an invisible director yelling “Cut!”
